The native species of walnut in California is Juglans californica. That seems simple enough, but the claro confusion comes from the distinction between the northern and southern varieties. The northern variety (Juglans californica var. hindsii or Juglans hindsii) is the highly figured, richly colored wood I’m referring to here. The southern variety (Juglans californica var. californica) is more like eastern black walnut. ” Because it is fast-growing and abundant (therefore inexpensive) and takes stain and other finishes exceptionally well, many cabinetmakers stain alder and pass it off (knowingly or not) as cherry.

This theory is wrong. Pine is a very respectable cabinet wood with a long tradition in American furniture-making. And although some species of pine are easily worked, others can be fairly difficult to handle and a nightmare to finish. While there is no such thing as “good” pine or “bad” pine, generally speaking there is a right pine for any given project based on the wood’s structural properties or its traditional use. To get the most out of pine, therefore, you must know something about the limitations and applications of the more than 30 native North American species.

With white oak, using a dark stain is not a good idea unless you really want to accentuate the rays. They’ll inevitably stand out as very contrasty yellow bands against the surrounding, more porous (therefore darker) wood tissue. If you’re going to stain white oak, use a blonde stain. Live—Live oak has never been a commercially important furniture wood. One reason why is that live oak is absolutely punishing to work with. Historically, live oak has only been used in very specialized applications.
